Schools across the Abbotsford School District were filled with pink today as students and staff united to stand against bullying and promote kindness, respect, and inclusion.

At McMillan Elementary School, members of the Joy and Kindness Club began the morning with colourful chalk art at the front of the school, reminding everyone walking in that kindness is cool. Their messages set the tone for Pink Shirt Day and reflected the heart behind their club’s work.

For more than three decades, Dean Fetterly has been a familiar and steady presence at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Now in his 33rd year with the Abbotsford School District, Dean reflects on a career shaped by relationships, opportunity, and a deep sense of belonging.

District staff members came together for our annual Shared Learning Conference, a powerful day of professional growth and collaboration focused on student success.

This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Keith Carlson, Professor of History at the University of the Fraser Valley and a Tier One Canada Research Chair in Indigenous and Community-Engaged History, challenged district staff to think differently about the stories we tell and the perspectives we centre in our work.

A mural titled Happiness After the Storm now welcomes students and staff at Rick Hansen Secondary School. Created through the leadership of a dedicated teacher and in collaboration with students from the RHSS Pride Alliance, the mural is a powerful visual reflection of representation, community, and hope.

The mural spans four panels, each representing a season of the year. Together, they tell a story of celebration and resilience across communities that have historically been underrepresented or marginalized.

At Abbotsford Senior Secondary School, students recently hosted the largest Model United Nations conference in the Fraser Valley, bringing together young delegates from across the region for a powerful, student-led learning experience.

A tragic act of violence in Tumbler Ridge yesterday resulted in the devastating loss of lives. We hold the families, students, staff, first responders, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community in our thoughts as they face an unimaginable loss.

At Eugene Reimer Middle School, the gym was filled with colour, excitement, and national pride as students and staff came together for their Winter Olympics celebration. The long-standing tradition, recently revived, brought the spirit of the Games back to the school in a way that was both fun and educational.

Throughout February, schools across the Abbotsford School District are marking Black History Month with learning opportunities, cultural experiences, and celebrations that highlight the diverse voices within their communities.

From classroom lessons and assemblies to guest speakers and cultural activities, each school is finding meaningful ways to recognize the contributions, histories, and cultures of Black Canadians and people of African descent around the world.

Across the Abbotsford School District, students explored creativity, developing technical skills, and sharing their artistic voices through school-based art shows. From long-standing traditions to new and innovative exhibitions, these showcases offer students meaningful opportunities to present their work to an authentic audience.
